Projects![]() St Mary the Virgin Church, CalneThe Victorian heating system in this beautiful 15th Century, Grade 1 listed building failed last year, so funds were raised for replacement. Acting as main contractor, we have taken the project right from design, currently continuing through to its completion in March 2015. Even before its failure, the existing system had not been performing efficiently. It has therefore been completely stripped out and replaced by twenty Kampmann Katherm trench heaters located within existing floor ducts, whilst still retaining the decorative grilles above. Additional heat emission is from Zehnder 'Radiavector' and Stelrad 'Planar' radiators and pipe coils, located around the Church. The system is served by two Broag 'Quinta' Pro 95 condensing boilers located in the basement Boiler Room. Overall control of the system is via a Trend Building Management System and the system is zoned to provide flexible use of space. The installation has been carried out with no hot works, so copper 'Pressfit' joints have been used, with screwed joints in steel pipework. The system is a 'sealed' type, with a Mikrofill EFD automatic top up unit. It has been designed to produce an internal temperarure of 16degC with an external ambient temperature of -1degC. Higher temperatures are achievable, but stability at this temperature is a requirement for the optimum performance of the Church's rare 1908 pipe organ.. Not only must special care be taken in routing services without causing undue disturbance to the fabric of the building; temperature gradients and humidity must be properly controlled to protect the artefacts, as well as providing comfort to the occupants. We are pleased to be associated with The National Trust and regularly work with them, providing breakdown, maintenance and installation services for these very special buildings. These are connected to a low level header from which six zones extend to the existing heating & hot water circuits. A Trend Building Management system with new control panel provides full control of the system, with user control via a laptop computer. Photos show four of the existing boilers, the new boilers, and the new low level header. The two glazed panels were replaced with timber grilles to enable air distribution, thus causing no easily visible changes to the neat interior, but plenty of extra warmth!
